West Highland Way Walk for Willie

Last week Sheila, family and friends walked the West Highland Way, this was in memory of our dad, grandad and boss Willie who walked the WHW 25 times. Over 7 days they walked nearly 100 miles, stopped at various B&B’s along the way (although some also camped, waking up most mornings with frost on the tents) – they couldn’t have asked for a better week in terms of the weather, beautiful sunny days and clear blue skies. When reaching the Bridge of Orchy on the fifth day, which was one of Willie’s favourite spots along the way, they scattered a small amount of Willie’s ashes over the bridge.

Well, Dad, we have done it, with blue skies, hurray
Your 26th time on The West Highland Way
With family, friends, we have come here together
Laughed – tended blisters – and had a good blether
Four seasons in one day, the wind at our backs
Waterproof clothing, warm clothes and good macs
The names of the places, so dear to your heart
Set off from Milngavie and made a great start
Onwards to Drymen, Rowardennan we sped
Inverannan and Tyndrum, were soon put to bed
And here, Bridge of Orchy our final farewell
As we head on to Kingshouse, you’ll wish us all well
Kinlochleven we’ll conquer, as you’ve done before
Then on to Fort William – the end of this tour
Your wishes we grant, as we lay you to rest
In your favourite place, The Highland Way, West
So much sky overhead, the hills all around
Gushing rivers and birdsong, that wonderful sound
You are part of this landscape, you two become one
God bless you and keep you, your journey is done.
